Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Shafer specializes in all sports medicine and athletic injuries with a particular interest in minimally invasive shoulder, elbow and knee arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. He is board certified through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS) in Orthopaedic Surgery with an additional Subspecialty Certification in Sports Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. While Dr. Shafer was born and raised in Arizona, he has traveled the country to attend some of the most prestigious medical institutions in the nation.

As a Fellow he served as a Team Physician for the University of Southern California Athletic Department, including the National Champion USC Football and Women's Volleyball teams. In addition, he served on the medical staff for the Summer X Games, and the Pac 10 Basketball and NCAA Volleyball Tournaments. Today, he remains an Orthopaedic Consultant to USC Athletics.

While in practice in Arizona, Dr. Shafer has served as a Team Doctor in a variety of capacities. He is currently the Spring Training Team Physician and Orthopaedic Consultant for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Based out of Camelback Ranch in Glendale, this involves evaluating, coordinating treatments/rehab, and performing surgery on players of all levels, from new draftees to major leaguers. He frequently provides game coverage in Los Angeles while they are at home in Dodger Stadium as well as accompanying them on road trips.

Dr. Shafer is also an Associate Team Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Phoenix Coyotes. The position entails attending numerous home games throughout the season and providing orthopaedic care as needed for both the home and visiting teams.

As a member of the Justin Sports Medicine Team, he provides medical coverage and expertise for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeos throughout Arizona. He is also Chairperson of the Medical Staff for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and Insight Bowl games providing medical care during the competing teams' stays in the Valley and on the sidelines of the games. He has also been an Associate Team Physician for the NFL's Arizona Cardinals.

As an orthopedic consultant to Athletes' Performance, the country's elite training center for athletes of all sports and military Special Forces, Dr. Shafer has taken care of Professional and College-Level Athletes of all sports.

As a native Arizonan, Dr. Shafer is very committed to serving his community. He volunteers his time as the team physician for several local high schools, providing pre-season physicals and covering games on Friday nights.

He lectures locally and nationally on sports medicine topics and has authored numerous articles in orthopaedic and sports medicine journals and was honored to be voted one of the Top Doctors in the Valley by North Valley Magazine in 2011.
